Krak Oct 2009-8

Krak Oct 2009-8

The RPS Archaeology & Heritage Group has a little alphabetic thing going, so I decided to cross-post Obviously all shots must have an A&H connection!
K is for Krak as in Krak des Chevaliers, a Crusader castle overlooking and controlling the Homs Gap in Syria. It is one of the most important preserved medieval castles in the world.
The Hospitallers/Templars finished building the castle in 1170. At its peak, Krak housed a garrison of around 2,000. This snap of one of the granaries was taken in October 2009. Although shelled and bombed, Krak has seemingly avoided any severe damage in the current Syrian civil war.
