The RPS Archaeology & Heritage Group has a little alphabetic thing going, so I decided to cross-post here. Obviously, all shots have an A&H connection!
U is for Underground – specifically London Underground’s disused Aldwych station. Opened in 1907 as ‘Strand’ station it closed in 1994 when the cost of replacing the original lifts was deemed too great. The station has many claims to fame, including the storage place for the Elgin Marbles during WWII, and infamy as one of London follies – passenger numbers were never great, and the pictured unfinished foot tunnel was part of an abandoned extension to Waterloo.
Taken in August 2014.
